Sinopec Commissions World’s Largest High-End Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA) Base in Chongqing

Sinopec subsidiary Chongqing Chuanwei Chemical has officially brought online a 50,000-tonne annual capacity specialty polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) production unit. The expansion brings the integrated complex’s total annual output capacity to 210,000 tonnes, establishing it as the world's largest single-plant manufacturing base for high-end PVA—often termed the "universal auxiliary material" of fine chemicals.

Industrial scale in water-soluble polymers and specialty fine chemicals has reached a new milestone in Western China. The operational launch of Sinopec Chongqing Chuanwei Chemical’s new specialty PVA facility enhances feedstock availability across advanced supply chains, including new energy, optoelectronics, high-end packaging, and precision engineering.

Known for its versatility, PVA serves as an indispensable basic material for traditional manufacturing while expanding into high-tech and life science sectors.

Broad Applications from Industrial Sizing to Biomedical Engineering

In addition to established industrial uses—such as textile sizing, high-performance adhesives, paper coating agents, and water-soluble barrier films—PVA’s strong biocompatibility drives significant growth across biomedical fields. Pharmaceutical-grade PVA requires stringent impurity control and biological safety standards for deployment in drug delivery systems, medical dressings, and tissue engineering scaffolds.

Recent technical developments have broadened PVA’s application footprint into smart hydrogels, cardiovascular therapeutic devices, novel antibacterial patches, and multi-functional excipients for pharmaceutical 3D printing. The polymer also underpins progress in high-end display materials, environmental remediation, radiation shielding, and biodegradable green packaging solutions.
