Avantium Announces Start-Up of Commercial-Scale FDCA Flagship Plant

Renewable and circular polymer specialist Avantium N.V. has initiated operations at its FDCA Flagship Plant in Delfzijl, the Netherlands, successfully producing its first batch of furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA). As the world's first commercial-scale manufacturing facility for FDCA, the milestone follows the commissioning of all primary process trains and positions the company to launch initial commercial deliveries by the end of 2026.

Selenis Acquires Polisan Hellas Assets, Scaling Capacity Beyond 200,000 Tonnes

Selenis, the only specialty copolyester manufacturer producing in Europe, has acquired the manufacturing assets of Greece-based Polisan Hellas for reinstallation at its primary production site in Portugal. Factoring in these assets and ongoing site expansions, Selenis will operate more than 200,000 metric tonnes (MT) of annual installed specialty copolyester capacity by 2028 across facilities in Portugal, Italy, Tunisia, and the United States.

SGI Composites Celebrates 30 Years of Composite Manufacturing

UK-based engineered glass-reinforced polymer (GRP) solutions manufacturer SGI Composites (formerly Sui Generis International) has marked its 30th anniversary from its operating base in Colchester. Part of the Milbank Group, the company designs, fabricates, and installs structural composite systems across infrastructure, rail, utilities, defense, marine, and automotive end-markets.

BYK Invests €12M to Expand Additive Capacity in Germany

Specialty chemicals supplier BYK has officially commissioned its expanded production and warehousing facility for high-performance additives in Schkopau, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. Located at the Dow ValuePark site, the €12 million investment adds a new extrusion line that expands the plant's production capacity by approximately 25%.

Chemical group BASF has launched a major expansion and equipment overhaul at its intermodal rail-road terminal in Ludwigshafen, Germany, backed by nearly €51 million in federal funding. The low hundreds-of-millions euro investment will consolidate legacy loading facilities and install automated gantry cranes by 2028.

Braskem and Lallemand Partner on Bio-Acetone Technology

Braskem and Lallemand Biofuels & Distilled Spirits (LBDS) have unveiled a joint technology to produce bio-acetone from corn ethanol without impacting fuel yields. Aiming for commercial supply by 2028, the drop-in renewable solution targets high-demand sectors across North America and Europe.

Lanxess Adopts Hydrogen Fuel at German Pigment Plant

German specialty chemicals producer Lanxess has commissioned a hydrogen fuel system at its Krefeld-Uerdingen iron oxide pigment plant, displacing natural gas in the spray drying process. Supplied directly via pipeline from an adjacent Covestro facility, the hydrogen integration is expected to cut carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 6,000 tonnes per year.
