Retired Wind Turbine Blades Repurposed for Road Infrastructure

Structural engineers at the University of Houston have demonstrated that decommissioned wind turbine blades can bypass traditional energy-intensive recycling or landfilling to serve directly as primary load-bearing infrastructure. Validated against AASHTO wind-load criteria, a full-scale highway sign portal constructed from retired composite blade segments cut material costs by 73% and lowered embodied greenhouse gas emissions by over 65%.

Indonesia Breaks Ground on Coal-to-Methanol Project

A ground-breaking ceremony was held on August 31 for Indonesia’s national strategic coal gasification-to-methanol project in East Kutai, East Kalimantan Province. Developed by PT Bumi Etam Chemical (BEC) at the Batuta Chemical Industrial Park, the industrial complex is designed to produce approximately 1.3 million metric tonnes of methanol annually.

Lanxess Adopts Hydrogen Fuel at German Pigment Plant

German specialty chemicals producer Lanxess has commissioned a hydrogen fuel system at its Krefeld-Uerdingen iron oxide pigment plant, displacing natural gas in the spray drying process. Supplied directly via pipeline from an adjacent Covestro facility, the hydrogen integration is expected to cut carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 6,000 tonnes per year.

China Titanium Approves RMB 11B Expansion

China Titanium Energy Chemical has greenlit two major industrial projects with a total initial investment of RMB 11 billion ($1.5B) across Gansu and Guizhou provinces. Designed to scale battery feedstock supply chains, the plans encompass a 600,000-tonne iron phosphate precursor base alongside a 400,000-tonne titanium dioxide and 1.4-million-tonne ferrous sulfate complex.
