Tosyalı continues to expand its environmental solutions developed in line with its circular production vision. Following its initial application on the TEM Highway between Gebze and Dilovası junctions, SteelSurf—a high-performance modified slag-based asphalt developed by recycling company Tosyalı Harsco—has now been applied on Gazanfer Bilge Boulevard (Santral Ramp), one of Kocaeli’s steepest transportation routes.
Implemented in cooperation with Simgemat as part of Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality's infrastructure enhancement efforts, steel mill slag supplied by Tosyalı Harsco was processed into artificial stone mastic asphalt by Simgemat using technology from Steelphalt, a UK-based Harsco company.
High Performance, Safety, and Eco-Friendly Structure
Engineered for routes exposed to heavy vehicle traffic and steep inclines, SteelSurf features high resistance to deformation, low permeability, high wear resistance, and extended service life. Utilizing steel mill slag in the asphalt mixture reduces the need for natural aggregates, preserving natural resources and supporting the circular economy.
Tosyalı Harsco and Zero-Waste Technologies
Tosyalı Harsco, a joint venture between Tosyalı and US-based Harsco, provides recycling solutions for the iron-steel, aluminum, copper, nickel, ferrochrome, and cement industries. The company converts slag into raw materials for asphalt, road construction, cement additives, fertilizer production, aggregates, and railway ballast.
Under a zero-waste approach, the company utilizes its proprietary Bloodhound software to track metallic iron content in real-time, reducing metal ratios to minimum levels. The resulting recycled slag aggregate serves as a durable alternative to natural stone.
