OYAK Subsidiary Almatis Drives Global Expansion in Advanced Materials

OYAK Group's Almatis is expanding its global footprint in alumina and advanced material technologies with major investments across the US, India, and China. CEO Anıl Sönmez highlighted that through low-carbon solutions like ECO-TAB® and strategic group synergies, the company aims to set global industrial standards backed by Turkish capital.

Amid shifting supply chain dynamics across semiconductors, electric vehicle (EV) battery cells, steel manufacturing, and high-performance electronics, high-purity alumina and specialized materials remain indispensable core components. Operating under the OYAK Group since 2016, Almatis is executing a broad-spectrum expansion strategy designed to transition the corporate footprint "beyond alumina" into advanced technical materials.

Following the commissioning of its integrated tabular alumina plant in India in 2022, Almatis completed its calcined alumina expansion project at its Arkansas facility in the United States in 2025. Furthermore, the company broke ground on a new calcined alumina plant in China in 2025, which is slated for operational startup in 2027. The upcoming Chinese manufacturing hub will supply high-spec raw materials critical for semiconductor manufacturing and EV battery chemistry tracks.

Global Alliances, Operational Synergies, and Decarbonized Product Lines

Detailing the group's global footprint expansion, internal group synergies, and its overarching "Mission NeutrAL" sustainability strategy, Almatis CEO Anıl Sönmez emphasized:

  • Geographic Expansion & Group Synergies: In addition to signing distribution and technical service agreements across Africa, North America, and Europe, Almatis executed a strategic partnership in South America alongside fellow OYAK enterprise Akdeniz Chemson.

  • Customer-Centric Customization: Internal surveys confirm that 90% of Almatis clients rate the company's innovation capabilities as "good" or "excellent," reflecting a shift from commodity raw material supply to tailored technical customization.

  • ECO-TAB® and Operational Yield Increases: Under its decarbonization framework, the company introduced low-carbon alumina lines like ECO‑TAB®. Industrial trials conducted with steel producers demonstrate that refractory systems incorporating ECO‑TAB® cut overall annual material consumption by 4.7% while yielding substantial thermal energy savings.
