L’Oréal Announces First 13 Startups Selected for €100 Million Sustainable Innovation Program

L’Oréal has announced the first 13 startups and small businesses selected for its L’AcceleratOR sustainable innovation program, following an evaluation of nearly 1,000 applications from 101 countries. Backed by €100 million over five years, the program is being run in partnership with the University of Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL).

L’Oréal Groupe said the selected companies will develop scalable solutions addressing some of the most pressing challenges related to climate, nature and the circular economy. The first cohort spans a wide range of innovation areas, from next-generation packaging and nature-based ingredients to circular solutions and digital tools aimed at reducing supply-chain emissions.

Thirteen “Change Makers” Across Four Focus Areas

Next-Generation Packaging and Materials

  • Kelpi (UK): Develops recyclable, low-carbon packaging made from seaweed.

  • Bioworks (Japan): Produces next-generation bioplastics derived from sugarcane and other plant-based sources.

  • Blue Ocean Closures (Sweden): Develops fiber-based caps and cap systems as alternatives to plastic packaging components.

  • Pulpex (UK): Develops next-generation recyclable paper bottles.

  • PULPAC (Sweden): Works on low-carbon, paper-based packaging production processes.

  • RAIKU (Estonia): Produces shock-absorbing protective packaging made from natural wood.

  • P2 Science (United States): Brings nature-derived materials to market using green chemistry methods.

  • Oberon Fuels (United States): Converts wood and pulp waste into renewable ingredients suitable for use in aerosol products.

Circular Solutions

  • Novobiom (Belgium): Uses fungal processes to transform complex waste into high-value products.

  • REPLACE (France): Develops technology that converts complex, multi-layer waste into durable new products in a single step.

  • Gás Verde (Brazil): Produces biomethane to replace fossil fuels in industrial and transportation applications.

Data and Emissions Management

  • Neutreeno (UK): Provides a digital system to help measure and reduce emissions across supply chains.

Pilot Phase to Run for 6–9 Months

L’Oréal said the selected companies will enter an intensive support phase led by CISL’s innovation team, focusing on preparing solutions for pilot deployment. Participants will also gain access to L’Oréal’s global resources to run 6–9 month pilot projects, with successful solutions expected to be scaled across the group’s international operations.

Ezgi Barcenas, L’Oréal’s Chief Corporate Responsibility Officer, said the program reflects a more focused and inclusive approach to partnerships aimed at accelerating the path from sustainable innovation to market.
