The takeover fully consolidates the chlor-alkali and EDC manufacturing operations at the Runcorn site under INEOS Inovyn. Beyond stabilizing downstream vinyl production, the facility plays a mission-critical role in the country's public health infrastructure, supplying approximately 98% of the chlorine used to treat the UK's drinking water. The integrated operations also deliver essential feedstocks to the domestic food processing, pharmaceuticals, healthcare, and construction sectors.
Securing National Resilience & Urgent Industry Demands
While the acquisition prevents the shutdown of the UK's sole EDC asset, management underscored the need for immediate government intervention to protect British industrial manufacturing against rising cost pressures and foreign imports.
Stephen Dossett, CEO of INEOS Inovyn, stated:
"Securing Runcorn’s asset, which is the last in the UK, from closure is an important step in strengthening the UK’s national resilience. But we need the Government to step up and play its part.
British chemicals manufacturers need a level playing field: cheaper energy, lower carbon and compliance costs, and urgent trade protection. Otherwise, we risk becoming dependent on imports for essential chemicals, from the salt and chlorine that help keep our drinking water safe to the materials used to build our homes and support critical manufacturing."
