A New Phase for the EU Chemicals Sector as the Critical Chemicals Alliance Holds Its First General Assembly

The Critical Chemicals Alliance, established by the European Union, will hold its first General Assembly on January 13 at the Chemelot Chemical Park in the Netherlands. The meeting will focus on strengthening the competitiveness of the EU chemicals industry and safeguarding critical production capacity.

Launched under the leadership of the European Commission, the Critical Chemicals Alliance is convening its first General Assembly on January 13 in the Netherlands to develop joint solutions to structural challenges facing the chemicals sector. The meeting at Chemelot Chemical Park is seen as a key gathering where strategic priorities for the future of Europe’s chemicals industry will be discussed.

Established within the framework of the EU Chemicals Industry Action Plan, the Alliance focuses on issues such as rising production costs, risks of plant closures, vulnerabilities in global trade, and the need to maintain continuous production of critical chemicals. During the General Assembly, member states, regional authorities, industry representatives, and other stakeholders will exchange views on coordinated actions aimed at strengthening the sector’s resilience.

The meeting is regarded as a milestone for shaping medium- and long-term strategies to preserve the competitiveness of the European chemicals industry. Organizations wishing to participate in the Alliance are required to register in advance for the General Assembly and sign the Alliance Declaration.

Through the Critical Chemicals Alliance, the European Commission aims to improve monitoring of strategically important chemicals and production facilities, enhance coordination of investments, and accelerate the modernization of the sector. The initiative is positioned as a key component of the EU’s long-term policy to protect and reinforce its chemicals manufacturing base.

The opening address of the General Assembly is expected to be delivered by the European Commission’s Vice-President responsible for industrial and industry policy, underscoring the strategic importance of the initiative within the EU’s broader industrial agenda.
