Momentive Silicones Outperform in Long-Term Weathering Study

Silicones and advanced materials specialist Momentive has highlighted the long-term field performance of its SilPruf™ weatherseal sealant portfolio. In multi-decade exposure studies at the Atlas Weathering Test Site in Miami, Florida, silicone sealants consistently outperformed polyurethane and acrylic alternatives in adhesion, flexibility, and elastic recovery.

Structural movement and continuous climate exposure make durable weatherproofing essential for high-rise facades. To benchmark real-world performance, test panels with glass and painted aluminum were exposed outdoors at a 45-degree south-facing angle under intense heat, humidity, and UV radiation.

Momentive evaluated silicone against polyurethane, acrylic, and third-party silicone formulations across five key parameters: adhesion, flexibility, resilience, toughness, and hardness.

Key Findings: High Elasticity and Extended Service Life

Silicone chemistries demonstrated clear performance advantages across key aging indicators:

  • Acetoxy Silicones: Exhibited exceptional durability, maintaining smooth surface integrity and 100% elastic recovery after decades of outdoor exposure.

  • Alkoxy Silicones: Offering neutral methanol cure and broad substrate compatibility, alkoxy formulations retained high flexibility and resilience well into their fourth decade of exposure, outlasting polyurethane and acrylic sealants.

Engineered to accommodate building movement without cracking, SilPruf sealants are installed across global architectural landmarks, including San Francisco's Mira Tower, New York's Central Park Tower, the Shanghai World Financial Center, and Shanghai Pudong International Airport.
