Harsh Operating Conditions Drive the Need for Advanced Protection
Motor control units, power supplies, inverters, battery management systems, HVAC control modules and industrial sensors are operating under increasingly demanding conditions. As exposure to heat, humidity and vibration rises, corrosive environmental effects also come into play. When combined, these factors elevate corrosion risks and make field durability more critical. Mechanisms such as silver migration, particularly under high humidity, further increase the likelihood of leakage currents and short circuits.
Low Ionic Content Targets Corrosion and Silver Migration
According to Henkel, the ionic content of Loctite STYCAST US 8000 A/B is kept below 20 ppm. This design approach is intended to reduce corrosion risk and limit silver migration, especially in high-humidity environments.
Key safety and durability indicators include a UL 746 RTI rating of 140°C and UL 94 V-0 flame-retardancy certification. Electrically, the material offers a dielectric strength of 24 kV/mm and maintains surface insulation resistance above 10⁸ Ω after 500 hours at 85°C and 85% relative humidity.
Application Ease and Manufacturing Flexibility
Application performance plays a decisive role in production quality for potting materials. The product’s mixed viscosity is specified in the range of 3,800 to 5,800 mPa·s. A standard 4:1 mixing ratio supports consistent dispensing and application. Henkel notes that the material flows easily into narrow gaps and complex geometries, enabling void-free encapsulation.
Curing flexibility is another key feature. The compound can cure at room temperature, while accelerated heat-cure options are available when required. This allows manufacturers to optimize processing flexibility and energy use.
Mechanical Properties Designed for Vibration and Thermal Expansion
Henkel emphasizes a balanced approach between strength and flexibility. Reported mechanical values include a Shore A hardness of 89, tensile strength of 9 MPa and elongation of 87%. This combination is intended to reduce cracking under vibration and better accommodate stresses caused by temperature fluctuations.
