L’Oréal has taken a major step in transforming its R&D capabilities by expanding its collaboration with Nvidia in artificial intelligence and computational chemistry. By integrating Nvidia’s “Alchemi” machine learning platform, the company is building a powerful AI engine capable of predicting molecular behavior at the atomic level.
This technology allows scientists to simulate how molecules interact and behave before physical testing, significantly accelerating formulation development in skincare and beauty products.
Up to 100x faster formulation processes
The system enables researchers to test thousands of variables simultaneously in a virtual environment. This dramatically shortens the time from laboratory research to final product development, delivering results up to 100 times faster than traditional methods.
Barbara Lavernos, Deputy CEO in charge of Research, Innovation and Technology at L’Oréal, highlighted the impact of the collaboration:
“By applying AI-powered molecular simulations to our proprietary active ingredients, we are transforming atomic-level scientific discoveries into direct consumer benefits. This allows us to significantly accelerate the development of more effective, more sensorial and more accessible products.”
Focus on photoprotection and skin tone management
The partnership is particularly focused on two key areas: photoprotection (sun care) and skin tone management. With predictive modeling enabled by Nvidia Alchemi, optimal formulations can be identified digitally before entering physical testing phases.
This approach enhances precision and performance, enabling L’Oréal to set new industry standards by optimizing molecular behavior and delivering scientifically advanced beauty solutions.
AI-driven innovation sets new benchmarks
Azita Martin, Vice President and General Manager for Retail and Consumer Packaged Goods AI at Nvidia, emphasized the breakthrough potential of the collaboration:
“By integrating Alchemi into R&D processes, L’Oréal can simulate ingredient performance at the atomic level. This accelerates breakthrough discoveries in formulation and enables the delivery of advanced beauty and preventative care products.”
L’Oréal showcased this next-generation predictive formulation science at the Nvidia AI Conference, reinforcing its leadership in technology-driven beauty innovation.
