Eti Bakır Publishes Climate and Nature Assessment Report

Eti Bakır, an operating company of Cengiz Holding and supplier of approximately 25% of Turkey’s refined copper, has released its inaugural "Climate and Nature-Related Risks and Opportunities Assessment Report," marking a first for the Turkish mining sector. Covering 8 industrial facilities across Turkey, the report shows that the company's circular integrated operations eliminated the need for 54.4 hectares of new mining footprints in Mazıdağı and achieved closed-loop water recovery rates of up to 95%.

Framing mining resilience through resource efficiency, climate change adaptation, and biodiversity stewardship, Eti Bakır published its benchmark "Climate and Nature-Related Risks and Opportunities Assessment Report 2025." Based on operational data from January 1 to December 31, 2025, the disclosure audits eight key production sites: Samsun, Mazıdağı, Küre, Adıyaman, Siirt, Murgul, Cerattepe, and İzmir.

The document demonstrates measurable progress across circular feedstock recovery, renewable power integration, logistic emissions abatement, and water conservation.

Circular Integration: The Küre–Mazıdağı–Samsun Supply Chain

Eti Bakır’s operational architecture routes industrial by-products from upstream concentration directly into downstream processing assets:

  • Samsun Smelter and Electrolysis Plant: Captures process sulfur dioxide emissions and metal-bearing residuals to recover 5,919 tons of copper and 680,000 tons of sulfuric acid annually, feeding domestic fertilizer and chemical manufacturing lines.

  • Mazıdağı Metal Recovery and Integrated Fertilizer Facility: Reclaims approximately 500,000 tons of secondary feedstocks annually, preventing the physical disturbance of 54.4 hectares of new mining land. Generating 528,000 tons of import-substituting fertilizers, the site offset 53,562 tons of CO2 (equivalent to annual emissions from 11,600 passenger vehicles) via 85,809 MWh of renewable electricity consumption.

  • Cerattepe Material Ropeway: Replacing heavy road haulage with an electric aerial ropeway system avoids roughly 1 million liters of diesel fuel consumption and transport emissions annually.

  • Murgul Land Stewardship: Avoided 29,877 tons of CO2 through renewable electricity use, alongside post-mining rehabilitation efforts that restored over 1 million square meters of operational land with more than 815,000 saplings planted since 2006.

  • Water Closed-Loop Recovery in Küre: The Küre concentrator recycles approximately 92% of its process water, while reclaiming 250,000 tons of pyrite tailings to limit waste impoundment needs. Across all 8 operations, closed-circuit water recycling maintains efficiency rates between 80% and 95%.

Executive Statement from Asım Akbaş

Asım Akbaş, General Manager of Eti Bakır, commented:

“With Turkey preparing to host COP31, addressing climate change must progress from high-level multilateral frameworks into measurable industrial execution across real-sector operations. Within Cengiz Holding, we approach decarbonization through comprehensive resource efficiency, circular closed loops, renewable energy adoption, water basin preservation, and ecological restoration.

Eti Bakır’s integrated report stands as a benchmark first for the Turkish mining sector. Covering our eight operating complexes, this assessment audits climate and nature-related risks and opportunities not merely as environmental obligations, but as prerequisites for operational continuity and long-term value creation.”
