Conventional CFRPs manufactured via thermosetting resin impregnation present long-standing end-of-life challenges, as cured polymers cannot be remelted or remolded, often resulting in incineration or landfilling. Leveraging its polymer material design capabilities, Teijin has introduced a novel resin architecture that retains standard mechanical rigidity while facilitating circular processing.

The technological milestone was achieved in part through the Strategic Innovation Promotion Program (SIP) "Building a Circular Economy System" under Japan's Cabinet Office.

### **Key Technical Innovations**

- **Heat-Activated Self-Healing:** Surface or structural resin degradation can be repaired via short exposure to a designated thermal threshold, mitigating premature structural replacement and material disposal.
- **Thermal Remolding Capacity:** Unlike standard thermoset composites, Teijin’s resin demonstrates controlled flowability when subjected to target temperature windows post-molding, permitting re-processing via compression molding techniques.
- **Chemical Resin Decomposition for Fiber Retrieval:** Traditional CFRP fiber recovery relies on thermal oxidation in furnaces exceeding 400°C—an energy-intensive process. The new CFRP decomposes when immersed in a specific chemical solution, yielding clean, long carbon fibers with low environmental overhead.

### **Sampling Targeted for 2028 and Supply Chain Integration**

Teijin plans to initiate developmental sample distribution for the new CFRP product line in **2028**, advancing collaborative R&D with academic and industrial research hubs.

With a focus on future mass production, Teijin Carbon is actively seeking joint development partnerships to optimize the entire value chain—from resin formulation and component design to closed-loop recycling infrastructure.
